“Misleading” labels: BEUC criticizes artisanal marketing, calls for tightened EU rules

14 Jun 2018 --- The European Consumer Organization (BEUC) has accused some food manufacturers of using “misleading tricks” on labels by using certain words and phrases that could be seen as “deceptive practices.” At the same time, the BEUC is calling for stronger regulation from the government on what can and cannot be on the label in a bid to eliminate some of the practices currently going on across Europe. The new report entitled “Food labels: tricks of the trade” highlights three practices that, according to the BEUC, “sugar-coat the actual quality of foods and drinks.”

This request comes in response to the US Cattlemen’s Association’s (USCA) petition to the USDA to restrict the terms “beef” and “meat” only to slaughtered animal-based products.

Fipronil egg contamination resurfaces as Germany recalls 73,000 Dutch eggs

13 Jun 2018 --- Less than a year after the insecticide fipronil found its way into millions of eggs in the Netherlands and sparked a contamination scandal that rippled around Europe, six German states have been ordered to recall 73,000 eggs from sale. Initial reports from The Agriculture Ministry of Lower Saxony say that a large number of eggs due to be sold in Germany have been found to be contaminated with fipronil.

Survey says consumers want more details on grocery packaging: Is SmartLabel the answer?

13 Jun 2018 --- More than 7 in 10 shoppers want to find out more about the grocery products they buy than they are currently able to get with traditional on-package labels, according to a new national survey. Grocery Manufacturers Association (GMA) and Food Marketing Institute (FMI) have launched a joint marketing campaign for the SmartLabel program. Shoppers want to go beyond the ingredients listed on the label to get information on what the ingredients do and why they are in the product, according to GMA and FMI.

Irish food industry is better prepared for Brexit than other sectors, says FDI

11 Jun 2018 --- Irish industry group Food Drink Ireland (FDI) has published its quarterly Business Monitor which includes an analysis of food and drink responses to a recent Ibec Brexit survey of businesses across Ireland. FDI has said the food industry fears the impact of Brexit but remains better prepared than other sectors ahead of Brexit next April.
