Sugar tax and reformulation dominates the industry

With the UK and Ireland set to enforce taxes in 2018, several campaigners, success stories and reformulation strategies were announced this year. Mexico sets somewhat of a precedent with the country noting an overall decline of 7.6 percent in sugary drinks leading to calls for others to follow suit. In the UK, Sustain joined forces with celebrity chef and campaigner Jamie Oliver to launch a new campaign – Sugar Smart! In October, one of Oliver’s restaurants reportedly saw a drop in sugary drink sales after a small levy was introduced. In the same month, a DSM consumer survey revealed that 47 percent of consumers are more concerned about sugar consumption than they were 3 years ago. The industry is responding to reduced sugar calls, with Nestlé set to strip out 10 percent of sugar across its UK confectionery portfolio by 2018.
