DDW launches on-trend paprika emulsion for orange beverages
14 Feb 2018 --- DDW “The Color House “ has launched an EmulsiTech cloudy paprika to its portfolio of liquid color emulsions, specifically designed for orange beverages. The non-GM, palm-free, water-dispersible coloring delivers a cloudy orange hue for soft drinks.
DDW’s cloudy paprika is stable in typical beverage formulations and can be applied in enhanced waters, juice drinks, iced teas, and novelty sparkling drinks. Paprika oleoresin offers an orange alternative to cochineal extract and FD&C Yellow 6. The liquid emulsion disperses easily in beverages and demonstrates improved performance compared to orange beta-carotene powder. DDW is able to custom blend with other natural colorings to arrive at a customer’s target hue.
Speaking to FoodIngredientsFirst, Campbell Barnum, Vice President of DDW says: “If beverage demand is an indicator, then US consumers seek alternatives to these two color additives. New beverage launches that contain cochineal extract have roughly halved compared to a decade ago, largely due to vegan considerations. Food and beverage consumption of FD&C Yellow 6 has declined 2 percent annually in recent years due to the consumer shift away from synthetics. Challenges for both beverage manufacturers and natural ingredient suppliers have mainly been stability and cost-in-use.”
“The new product is formulated specifically for beverage applications. We already offer other colors in the EmulsiTech portfolio, including water dispersible, liquid paprika oleoresin for food applications, such as savory snacks, salad dressing, and confectionery products,” he explains.
“We developed the EmulsiTech paprika in response to customer demands for a cloudy, liquid orange color with no ringing and no bottle or cap staining,” says Jody Renner-Nantz, Applications Manager. “It also complements the clear paprika version that we launched in 2016,” she adds.
DDW produces a full portfolio of EmulsiTech color emulsions at its manufacturing site for natural coloring in Louisville, Kentucky, USA. The plant, which opened in 2015, is adjacent to the DDW Global Support Center.
At a future date, the new product will also be available at the company’s natural color facility in County Cork, Ireland, which will serve European markets.
Samples of the product are available in the US as of today, 14th February.
