UK report: FareShare surplus food redistribution saves £51mn every year with potential for huge scale-up

22 Oct 2018 --- A new socio-economic impact report claims that collecting food that would otherwise go to waste and redistributing it to good causes, could save the British economy approximately £51 million (US$66.5mn) every year. And, if charities such as FareShare could scale up operations, these savings could sky-rocket to an estimated £500 million. The Wasted Opportunity Report, carried out by NEF Consulting, evaluates the economic and social value of redistributed surplus food, as well as the current and potential cost avoided by the UK public sector as a result of the charity’s work.

Better Juice reduces sugars and maintains flavor with new enzymatic technology

22 Oct 2018 --- Plantible Foods, the creators of a sustainable, allergen-free protein derived from lemna (also known as duckweed), has completed a pre-seed funding round led by Unshackled Ventures, an early-stage fund for immigrant-founded start-ups based in Silicon Valley. With the investment, the amount of which has not been disclosed, Plantible Foods says it will finalize its proprietary extraction technology and work with leading food scientists on the commercialization of its ingredients.

World first: Dutch start-up launches zero-chemical additives and sweeteners

22 Oct 2018 --- Rotterdam-based start-up, 7th Circle BV, has launched their new range of natural, healthy additives called Fooditive. The launch heralds the introduction of the world’s first zero-chemical additives to the food and beverage market. The new Fooditives are derived from wholly food waste and include emulsifiers, sweeteners, thickening agents and preserving agents.

US tackles food waste: New agreement to educate consumers and businesses

Unsustainable agricultural warnings: Governments urged to tackle meat and dairy over-consumption

19 Oct 2018 --- Governments do not have policies in place to tackle the over-consumption of meat and dairy around the world, according to a new report from The Changing Markets Foundation. However, the report, Growing the Good: The Case for Low Carbon Transition in the Food Sector, points to the fact that government policies universally support unsustainable agricultural production systems dominated by intensive meat and dairy farmers and producers. At the same time, meat consumption is more than double the recommended level for healthy diets in the US and several EU countries.

18 Oct 2018 --- Almonds have retained the number one spot for nut introductions in Europe, according to the latest Innova Market Insights data. With a 47 percent share of global almond product introductions, the region leads globally for the eleventh year running. Europe as a whole saw over 5,000 new introductions with almonds – a 14 percent increase on the previous year. Germany, France and the UK follow the US as the top leading countries in Europe with 2,414 new almond products introductions collectively in 2017. This is the third consecutive year that almonds have taken the top spot in Europe.

Future high-protein peas: Roquette invests in Israeli seed breeding company

18 Oct 2018 --- Roquette and Equinom, an innovative Israeli-based breeding technology company, have signed a partnership agreement for the development and sourcing of new pea varieties with high-protein content. Global Food Security Index: Singapore claims top spot as US and UK drop to third place

17 Oct 2018 --- The agriculture division of DowDuPont, Corteva Agriscience, and The Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) have released the 2018 Global Food Security Index (GFSI) findings which signal a shift toward more resilient food security measures. For the first time, Singapore claims the top spot in the 2018 GFSI ranking, partly because GDP per capita has risen nearly 30 percent since 2012, while the percentage of household expenditure that is spent on food is 6.9 percent.

AgWater Challenge: Target and ADM outline commitments to protect freshwater resources

17 Oct 2018 --- Ceres and World Wildlife Fund (WWF) have announced the addition of Target, a general merchandise retailer that serves guests at more than 1,800 stores, and Archer Daniels Midland Company (ADM), one of the world’s largest agricultural processors and food ingredient providers, to the AgWater Challenge. The two companies’ new water stewardship commitments are to be shared at the Financial Times Water Summit in London.
