Acrylamide: an ongoing concern amid regulatory pressure
Limiting the content of the carcinogen acrylamide remains a key formulation challenge for certain sectors of the food industry. For example, this year a watchdog called for stronger regulations after a survey found high levels of acrylamide in children’s biscuits. Analysis conducted by the Changing Markets Foundation reviewed the results of almost 9,000 laboratory tests conducted in Europe associated with high levels of acrylamide in food. Later in the year, new EU regulations that aim to reduce consumer exposure to potentially harmful acrylamide in food products were welcomed.
