Half-year report: Flavor players spread bets, policy hurdles

Jun 2018

The US outlawing of PHOs: On June 18, 2018, US regulation came into force regarding the complete removal of trans fats in the form of partially hydrogenated oils (PHOs). Manufacturers must now ensure that their products no longer contain PHOs for uses that have not been otherwise authorized by the FDA. In January 2006, FDA required the food industry to declare the amount of trans fat in food on the Nutrition Facts label. There has been time to reformulate as FDA had set a compliance period of three years, previous to the June 18, 2018 date.
