Meat scandals: an industry with an image problem

The meat industry has been trying to shake off the image of incessant cornercutting in order to supply overly cheap meat for several years, through highlighting traceability. But several new scandals did emerge in 2017 too. A Brazilian beef scandal involved the exporting of adulterated meat to countries around the world. In September, the UK’s biggest chicken supplier, 2 Sisters, was embroiled in a food safety breach after undercover footage emerged of workers altering the slaughter date of poultry. Shortly after chicken production was resumed at the company’s West Bromwich site, British MPs ruled that problems at the poultry group were “not a one off.”
