Plant-based potential: the big boys set their roots
The major players are increasingly realizing that the plant-based segment requires special attention for future growth. In April, Danone sealed the acquisition of WhiteWave under the name DanoneWave and subsequently invested US$60 million in its US plant-based beverage facility. Also boosting its position in the plant-based food segment in 2017 was Nestlé, with the acquisition of California-based Sweet Earth. In October, vegan company Beyond Meat announced plans to expand into the UK in 2018, by launching its famous meat-free Beyond Burger.
