Arla brings organic baby brand to UK market, steps up digital offerings

19 Oct 2018 --- Arla is bringing its follow-on formula to UK parents with a new range of baby products. The dairy co-operative is aiming to build on the success seen in Denmark and China by extending the Arla Baby&Me Organic brand which will include porridge and pouches, with the launch also seeing Arla step up its digital ambitions with the UK’s first direct to consumer offering.

Lactalis acquires infant nutrition business from Aspen Pharmacare for US$860m

17 Sep 2018 --- French dairy group Lactalis is looking to further expand in the infant formula market, with the acquisition of the infant nutrition business of South African company Aspen Pharmacare for €739.8 million (US$860.7 million). Lactalis is a privately owned, global leader in the dairy industry with revenue of €18.4 billion (US$21.4 billion) sales in over 200 countries, approximately 80,000 employees and 246 industrial plants in 47 different countries.

Infant formula safety: ISO-IDF develops standard for chloride content

06 Sep 2018 --- The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) is developing a series of standards for verifying many of the ingredients of infant formula to show the product is safe for consumption and contains what it says on the label. The latest one, ISO 21422 | IDF 242 for the determination of chloride content, has just been published.

Lactalis baby milk in worldwide recall after salmonella contamination

12 Dec 2017 --- French dairy group Lactalis has recalled its formula milk and baby food following the discovery of salmonella cases in babies and after 26 children under the age of six fell in France earlier this month. The affected Lactalis products have been recalled in France and for export to markets including Europe, Africa, South America and China. The recall covers hundreds of baby milk powder products marketed globally under the Milumel, Picot and Celia brands.

New Research Shows Illegal Levels of Arsenic Found in Baby Foods

05 May 2017 --- In January 2016, the EU imposed a maximum limit of inorganic arsenic on manufacturers in a bid to mitigate associated health risks. Researchers at the Institute for Global Food Security at Queen's have found that little has changed since this law was passed and that 50 per cent of baby rice food products still contain an illegal level of inorganic arsenic.

Mead Johnson to be Acquired by Reckitt Benckiser for $16.6 Billion

10 Feb 2017 --- Mead Johnson Nutrition Company has reached an agreement to be acquired by Reckitt Benckiser Group plc (RB), the world's leading consumer health and hygiene company. Under the agreement, shareholders will receive $90 in cash for each share of common stock, valuing the total equity at $16.6 billion. As a result of this transaction, Mead Johnson will become a new division of RB with its globally-recognized Enfamil and Nutramigen brands joining RB's portfolio of leading consumer health brands.

MEPs Veto Plans to Allow Sugar-Laden Baby Foods That Promote Obesity

21 Jan 2016 --- Draft EU rules that would allow baby foods to continue to contain up to three times more sugar than is recommended by the World Health Organisation were vetoed by the European Parliament yesterday, as they fail to protect infants and young children against obesity, say MEPs. Instead, they advocate reducing the EU sugar content limit to match the WHO recommendations.
