06 Sep 2018 --- Amyris has announced that its zero-calorie sweetener made from sugarcane has received designation as GRAS (Generally Recognized as Safe) by an independent expert panel. This designation is based on US Food & Drug Administration (FDA) requirements and allows Amyris to begin commercially selling its new, natural, zero-calorie sweetener.

Using beverage sweetening as an equivalized example, PureCircle can now supply enough Reb M to sweeten approximately 500 million cases of zero-calorie carbonated soft drinks. The company continues to build production capacity and estimates that three years from now, it could supply enough Reb M to sweeten 1 billion cases of zero-calorie carbonated soft drinks or the equivalent in beverages and foods using Reb M as the sweetener.

Allulose potential: German start-up develops “real sugar without calories”

27 Jun 2018 --- German start-up Savanna Ingredients GmbH is producing initial quantities of allulose monosaccharide, also known as allulose, which is a rare but up and coming natural sugar that it positions as “real sugar without calories.” Allulose exists in very small quantities in nature. It can be found in foods such as figs, raisins, molasses and maple syrup.

Independent panel advising WHO silent on sugar taxes, opinions split over levies

04 Jun 2018 --- A new report from an independent panel advising the World Health Organization (WHO) does not endorse sugar taxes on soft drinks as a way of cutting obesity. Released last Friday in Geneva, the report entitled Time to Deliver does not specifically include a sugar tax among its recommendations to reduce non-communicable diseases (NCDs) – illness like cancer, heart conditions, breathing problems and obesity that are not caused by infections and are not passed on from person to person.
